WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING?

Why not?! Teeth whitening treatments are some of the most versatile and least expensive cosmetic dental treatments available. Brightening your smile by just a few shades makes you look younger and healthier. Many patients are amazed at the difference their whiter smiles make on their overall appearance. With a brighter smile comes more confidence. And when whitening options come at a lower price point than almost every other cosmetic dental treatment, teeth whitening is typically the biggest bang for your buck.

In-Office Whitening Process

Treatment Plan

At your consultation, you’ll discuss your needs with your dentist. If teeth whitening isn’t right for your situation, we can discuss alternatives. But if teeth whitening is the best option to help you smile brighter, we’ll provide a treatment plan that allows you to achieve your goals.

Procedure Prep

At your in-office teeth whitening appointment, your dentist will first prep you for the procedure. An expander will be placed in your mouth to hold your lips back and keep them from coming into contact with the whitening solution. You’ll also be given glasses to protect your eyes from lights used during the procedure.

Application

Once you’re prepped, the whitening solution will be carefully applied to your teeth and a light will be used to activate the compound. In-office teeth whitening treatments typically take 45 minutes to 1 hour. Once complete, you’ll leave the office with a bright, beautiful smile that’s several shades whiter.

The Veneer Process

Consultation

The process starts with an initial consultation with the doctor. Dr. Kirkegaard will examine your mouth, take scans or impressions of your teeth, and provide information about the procedure to determine if it's a good fit for you. If you move forward with treatment, you'll select the desired shape and color of your new smile.

Treatment Process

The treatment process begins with the removal of a very thin layer of enamel, to be replaced by the veneers. The process of manufacturing veneers can take 2-3 weeks, so you'll wear a set of temporary veneers in the meantime. At your next appointment, Dr. Kirkegaard will check the fit and shape of the veneers, and then bond them to your teeth.

Veneers Attachment

At your next appointment, Dr. Kirkegaard will check the fit, shape, color, and style of your new veneers. If they fit perfectly, he will bond them into place with dental adhesive. You'll leave our office with a brand new, confident smile!

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AFTER LOSING TEETH?

Did You Know...

that by delaying treatment for missing teeth, you risk bone resorption, plus more complicated and expensive procedures down the line?

When you lose a tooth, your jawbone begins to deteriorate, which alters the shape of your jawline and entire face. It also impacts the healthy teeth around the space, putting you at risk for serious infections and losing even more teeth from decay.

Don’t delay treatment. Dental Implants preserve your oral health. Take our brief quiz to see if you qualify.

Why Choose Snap-In Implant Dentures?

  • More stable than traditional dentures, which are made to be removed daily.
  • Smile with confidence, as snap-in dentures are more comfortable and nature looking.
  • Enjoy your favorite foods, with no limitations on hard, sticky foods.
  • Speak confidently knowing your dentures are secure.
  • Live comfortably, without irritation from movement

HOW IT WORKS: THE DENTAL IMPLANT PLACEMENT AND RESTORATION PROCESS

Initial Consultation

At your consultation, your dentist will determine if dental implants are right for you. Your doctor will examine your mouth, take x-rays, and determine if your jaw is strong and healthy enough to support one or more dental implants. You and your dentist can also explore other restorative dentistry options at this time.

Scans and Fit

After you’ve been approved for treatment, your dentist will create a surgical plan for your dental implant, and schedule your oral surgery appointment. At this appointment, your dentist will create a small opening in your gum tissue, place a dental implant secure in the jaw, then clean the area and suture it shut to encourage proper healing.

Path To Your New Smile

Once your implant has been placed, healing will begin. It takes 1-2 weeks to heal completely from surgery, but it will take between 3-6 months for your dental implant to bond permanently with your jaw bone in a process called “osseointegration”.

Have Questions About Invisalign?

Find Answers Here

If you have minor or moderate orthodontic issues, you are likely a good candidate for treatment with Invisalign. So long as your mouth is free of any oral health issues like gum disease or tooth decay, you will probably be eligible to proceed with treatment. However, Invisalign is not for everyone. Severe orthodontic issues may not be able to be addressed with Invisalign. In these cases, we usually recommend treatment with traditional metal or ceramic braces as they can provide more powerful results. To find out about your options for orthodontic treatment, schedule your consultation today!

While Invisalign trays look very similar to night guards and mouthguards, we do not recommend that you use Invisalign as a nightguard. The clear plastic trays are designed to gently shift your teeth, not protect them. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend that you get a night guard to protect your teeth and go with traditional braces instead of Invisalign. If you wear your aligners at night and notice that they are becoming cracked or worn down, this may be a sign that you are grinding your teeth at night. This will affect your treatment so be sure to let your doctor know right away if you think you might be grinding your teeth.

The cost of treatment with Invisalign is usually comparable to the cost of traditional braces. Every case is different, though, so it’s important to discuss your budget with your doctor. During your consultation, your doctor will consider multiple factors including your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget before helping you decide which treatment to proceed with.

Invisalign aligners are nearly impossible to see when wearing them. This is because they are made out of clear plastic and are perfectly fit to your smile. Your trays will be custom-made trimmed to fit to your gum line for a more seamless look. Plus there are no metal brackets or wires, so you can feel confident in your smile throughout treatment. However, if you eat or drink with your aligners in, they could become stained, making them more visible.

These clear aligners are designed onto a mold of your teeth. A lab technician will apply layers of a photo-sensitive liquid resin to this custom mold. Next, the technician will expose this resin to a laser, curing it into a hard, yet flexible, thermoplastic. This plastic is called SmartTrack®, and it was created exclusively for Invisalign treatment. It’s FDA-approved and contains no BPA, BPS, latex, or gluten.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN TEETH WHITENING DAMAGE TEETH?

Professional teeth whitening that is overseen and administered by a qualified dentist will never damage your teeth. Your dentist will ensure that you get the proper whitening products and that you do not over whiten your teeth. However, it is possible to damage the teeth by over whitening them. The peroxide-based whiteners used in the teeth whitening process can weaken the teeth and damage the enamel if they are not used properly, or are used too frequently. For this reason, it’s a good idea to avoid over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening kits from sources like Amazon and other websites, which could contain dangerously-high levels of peroxide. If you do not want to pay for professional teeth whitening services from your dentist, make sure you only use ADA-approved whitening products. ADA-approved products have relatively low concentrations of peroxide, so the risk of enamel damage from over-whitening is much lower.

WHY DOES TEETH WHITENING CAUSE SENSITIVITY?

The precise reason that whitening causes sensitivity is not fully known, but the leading theory is that it’s due to “dentinal microtubules.” These extremely small, microscopic channels in our teeth connect the exterior of the tooth enamel to the interior nerve, allowing us to feel sensations in our teeth. The theory is that, since peroxide-based whiteners weaken the enamel very slightly, this exposes the microtubules, which become much more sensitive. Then, as the enamel remineralizes and becomes stronger after the whitening process is over, they are sealed up again, and no longer feel overly sensitive. This would explain why the sensitivity caused by teeth whitening typically only lasts for a few days.

WHICH TEETH WHITENING PRODUCTS ACTUALLY WORK?

There are two categories of teeth whitening products that actually work. The first are abrasive whiteners, such as toothpaste that contains baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and other very mild abrasives. These abrasives work similarly to sandpaper, rubbing plaque and surface stains away from your teeth. These abrasive whiteners work on minor stains, but the abrasive is not strong enough to damage enamel. It is recommended that you avoid charcoal toothpaste, which has abrasives that may be hard enough to damage your enamel with frequent use. Stick to an ADA-approved whitening toothpaste product. The second category of teeth whitening products that actually work are chemical whiteners that contain peroxide. These are available both from dentists and over-the-counter, but it’s best to work with a dentist to get your desired results, and ensure that your teeth are not damaged by over whitening. To explore your options in further detail and make sure you choose a safe, effective teeth whitening product, get in touch with your dentist for a consult.
